Regarding Debbie from Texas' comments about a battery operated watch being "lower class" than an automatic/mechanical:

I am an avid watch collector, and while no expert, I have learned quite a bit just from trying to learn what I am able in order to make an informed decision regarding time pieces I am interested in purchasing. If you don't care about a watch being extremely accurate, and don't mind changing the time on your watch every few days, then automatic watches are perfectly fine. I own several automatic watches myself, and enjoy them a lot, but for the work week??? Not a chance....Not even a quality automatic movement like the swiss valjoux 7750 keeps time well enough, for long enough, to make me comfortable wearing it to work when I have meetings (especially in a business that demands punctuality). This Invicta Russian Diver will keep time better than any automatic out there, so don't ever believe that a battery operated watch makes it inferior in ANY way. I strongly recommend that you do a search on the internet for: "How does a quartz watch work?" .... I think you will learn a lot. If it doesn't explain the difference between a quartz movement and a mechanical, then I suggest you do another search on that criteria...and yes...an automatic is considered a mechanical watch. The difference being that there is a counter weight in the automatic that winds the watch by simply moving your arm, but it is still winding the main spring...just in a different manner than a straight up/old fashioned watch where you wind the crown to keep it going.

I write this not to make you feel ignorant, Debbie, but rather to help you understand why a battery isn't a bad thing, or a factor in the quality of the watch. I just hate to see people spend their money on a watch assuming that being automatic makes a watch better or worse. That's why I suggest you study the differences between a mechanical and a quartz movement, decide what factors are most important to you in a watch and then make your purchase with those things in mind. The warranty offered by the watch manufacturer is another good thing to compare as well. Invicta, for instance, offers a 1 year warranty on this watch...but 5 minutes on the phone or computer will upgrade it to 5 years without any additional cost (if you buy it from an authorized retailer like Amazon...or oddly enough...on ShopNBC or their website..which is [...]).

In conclusion; Whether you buy an automatic/mechanical watch or a quartz watch, should be determined by what you are looking for in a watch. If you are looking for a piece of jewelry and don't care whether it keeps good time or not, then one or the other shouldn't even be a factor at all. Pick the one that you like the looks of, or goes best with your new outfit....whatever your reason is. If you can't stand the thought of having to take your watch in for a new battery every 3 to 5 years (which is the estimated range of the life of today's watch batteries) and don't mind your watch gaining anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes every day (depending on the quality of the automatic movement in your watch), then by all means....buy an automatic watch. If you demand accuracy in your watch (and sure...there are differences in the quality of quartz movements as well, but most do a very good job of keeping time....certainly more reliably than an automatic) and you like all the "bells and whistles" that you find on different watches (because of the room it takes for the workings of an automatic watch, there are fewer options on them. Most of them will only give you a second hand and a date window. Some of the more expensive ones, like the valjoux 7750 I mentioned earlier, will have the day of week, date and chronograph...but the cases for these are huge! You'd never fit one under the cuff of your shirt without some serious alteration ) then you will want to go with a quartz movement. It takes 5 or 10 minutes every few years to change your battery (and unless you know what you are doing and dont want to void your warranty, you should find out from the watch manufacturer who their authorized service representatives are. The reason they are particular about this, is because most mid to high end watch makers use special seals/gaskets to "water-proof" their time pieces, and if not done correctly, a watch owner is going to be calling them and screaming about how they went diving and their watch no longer works :O)..... but having to follow instructions is a small hassle to deal with for an amazing time piece!!!

Oh yeah....the watch above :O)While I don't have this exact time piece, I do have more than half a dozen Russian Divers from Invicta, and have NEVER had the slightest issue with any of them (other than my niece cross threading the "canteen lid" covering the crown on one of them. I'm sure I could have had it fixed with the proper tap and dye, but I just snipped the chain off and gave it to one of my nephews...and told him that he shouldn't wear it underwater anymore :O) Invicta is a solid quality watch manufacturer....Especially for the prices they offer them for! They are one of those companies who don't spend millions and millions of dollars annually on advertising, and pass the savings to the customer....which I really appreciate. I have countless Invicta watches in my collection and there isn't a one of them that I look at and wish I hadn't purchased. They offer quality time pieces at very outstanding prices. What more can one ask of any merchant?
